Submarine Active Faults and Morpho-Tectonics Around the Iberian Margins: Seismic and Tsunamis Hazards

The aim of this work is to make a synthesis at regional scale focused on the geophysical characterization submarine faults around Iberian margin identify active structures and analyze their development in framework present plate organization. Most these show seabed morphological expressions mapped with high-resolution swath bathymetry data, parametric sub-bottom profiles multichannel seismic profiles. Present tectonics, deformation, seismicity, tsunami-affected coastal areas mainly south Iberia Eurasian Nubia boundary. Submarine are represented by long strike-slip fault systems arcuate fold-thrust systems. Their takes place response NW-SE convergence between plates. We propose strain partitioning model boundary into simple pure shear zones explain distribution mechanisms along Gulf Cádiz, Gibraltar Arc Alborán Sea present-day stress orientation. Nevertheless, deformation also NW margin. Thus, Galician Portuguese margin, several as thrust high-seismic activity ocean-continent transition reflect re-activation former structures. suggest that W eastwards transfer short-offset transform Mid Atlantic Ridge oceanic weakness Eurasia domains. from bathymetric data good agreement geodetic focal mechanisms.
